Peter Faust Barra Charters
Trophy Barra Year-round
Barramundi at Peter Faust Dam near Proserpine: The fishing can be good year-round. Here’s Luke’s overview of fishing on the lake at different times of the year.
With decades of experience in Queensland’s premier barramundi fishing destinations, Luke offers tailored barra fishing adventures on the waters of Peter Faust Dam, also known as Lake Proserpine, year-round.
Luke lives just a few minutes drive from the dam and spends more time on its water than most. This gives him a unique insight into how it is fishing at any time of the year. While this is a general guide, get in touch to find out about the current fishing conditions!
SUMMER: December to February
In the heat of summer, barramundi become highly active, especially during dawn and dusk.
Guided sessions with Luke are timed to coincide with these active hours with fishing generally starting just before first light and ending after the sun hits the horizon. Full day sessions are typically split into two with a break over the hottest part of the day.
As for the fishing itself, while warmer water generally lends to surface and shallow diving lures, the barra at Peter Faust can be deeper on timber throughout the year.
Autum: March to May
As we move away from full summer, the days can get more comfortable on the water for visitors not used to North Queensland heat! March can still be hot, but especially as we move into April and May we can get magnificent runs of weather and the option to fish right through the middle of the day opens.
At this time of year, Luke uses often focuses on deeper presentations—swimbaits and plastics—along key structural points. It’s an ideal season for anglers looking to learn nuanced techniques from a seasoned guide and wanting to learn how to use their own livescope and live vision electronics.
Winter: June to August
Winter can be challenging in other parts (read: colder parts) of Queensland but barramundi at Peter Faust Dam do remain productive pretty much year-round.
Luke can help you find barra in the sun-warmed shallows and the deeper timber lines where cool-weather barra (that’s NQ “cool”) still feed.
Slow retrieves and patience pay off here — and Luke’s insight and time on the dam can make all the difference.
SPRING: September to November
Spring is often big fish trophy season!
Rising temperatures after the cooler months can mean explosive strikes and big rewards.
While the lake can often be very busy at this time of year – the annual ABT event is held during this time – Luke has guided countless clients to their personal bests during this window, using strategic lure choices and refined techniques honed over years of experience.
